TIME

Time is the fourth dimension of art and design. Time refers to change, and to the progression of events. Time exists in art to remind artists of limits. Time can be divided into categories such as measured, experienced, running, biological, and digital.

Measured time can be described as actual time. Minutes, seasons, and years are all examples of of measured time. Live performances rely on measured time. Experienced time is implied, psychological, and subjective time. Experienced time is influenced by emotions and other outside forces on a person. Artists can manipulate a participants perception of time with the environment. Running time is the total length of a video, art piece, or game. Biological time is time related to bodily functions, and is effected by things like sleep and hunger. Digital time is described as time associated with technology. It is measured in milliseconds, and can also be associated with sporting events and battery life.

The Clock by Christian Marclay

The Clock is a 24 hour video installation in which the time in the video always matches up to the time in the gallery. I really enjoy this piece because of the creativity and effort put into finding and stitching all of the different clips together. This is important as 4D art because is utilizes the element of time in a very explicit and creative way.

SOUND

Sound is defined as vibrations that can be heard when reaching a person's ear. Sound is the basis or speaking, singing and musical expression. Communication and public spaces are typically regulated with sound. There are three basic parts of sound: attack, sustain, decay. The attack of sound is the growth and onset, the sustain elements is the duration of the sound, and the decay is the termination or end of the sound.

Sound can be arranged into many different categories such as: synchronous, nonsynchronous, asynchronous, diegetic, and non-diegetic. Synchronous sound is sound that is timed to line up with its visual counterpart. Nonsynchronous sound is any sound that is heard while its source is not currently visible. Asynchronous sound does not match up with any visuals. Diegetic sounds are defined as sounds of characters or objects within a work, and ambient sounds, while non-diegetic sounds are typically narration or un-realistic sound effects. Non-diegetic sounds are often used to express emotion.

Blackpool High Tide Organ by Liam Curtin and John Gooding

The Blackpool High Tide Organ at Pleasure Beach is a wonderful example of sound art. The sculpture is designed to emulate the sound of the natural and man-made environments of the area. The sculpture produces sound at the high tide of the sea, when the seawater pushes air up into the pipes of the sculpture. This work of art is particularly interesting to me because it produces its sound without any human intervention.

MOVEMENT

Movement in time based art can involve both participation and observation. Movement is described as the variation of location of aspects like like, sound, and positioning. Movement can be used to portray different types of emotions and other reactions. There are different types of movement in art, for example, successional and oppositional movement. Successional movement is movement that leads the viewers eyes in one direction. Oppositional movement is a combination of aspects that lead the viewers eyes in different directions.

Movement in sound has parts: attack, sustain, and decay. Movement also takes a large part film and video, such as camera movement, or movement of the subject being filmed. Certain camera movements subconsciously effect how the viewer experiences a film, different ways of filming are used to provoke and express certain emotions. Movement in film and video helps viewers understand that the world in which the film or video takes place, exists and expands beyond the current frame.

clip from animated cartoon Steven Universe Future created by Rebecca Sugar

This clip shows the use of 3d camera movement in a two dimensional space. It gives the world a very 3d feel, and shows how expansive the world of this cartoon is, even beyond the typical viewing frames. It can be difficult to execute such movement within 2d amination, therefore this is a very impressive show of animation skill.
