Elements of 4D_Audrey Konkle

   Elements of 4D:

Time:

4-D is the fourth dimenison of art. The elements of 4D are time, architecture/topography, light, movement, and sound. There are several categories of time such as measured time, experienced time, running time, biological time, and digital time.

Measured time is when time is measured by reacuring events such as minutes, years, or seasons. An example of using Measured time in 4D art are durational performances. Experienced time is the amount of engagement the viewer has with the piece and how long they feel like they are engaging with the piece. Running time is the total length of an event or video piece. For example, a sound based media (music) may have a running time of 3 minutes and a movie might have a running time of a hour and a half. Meanwhile, the plot time is the span of time that is covered within a piece. Biological time is the measure of time related to bodily functions. Participants may have different reactions to art if they are feeling tiered or hungry. Digital time is measure through technology like clocks that count milliseconds or your phone's battery life.

Artist: John Cage

Title: Mapping the studio II with color shift, flip, flop, & flip/flop (Fat Chance)

The artwork is about the artist's cat and the mice that has invaded his studio, and how they interact with each other. The piece has a running time of 6 hours and shows the viewers moments of stillness and action . I enjoy the piece's manipulation of color to create different moods. I though it was interesting how the artist had filmed nearly 46 hours of footage, but only chose 6 hours of footage because the viewing hours were only 6 hours in a day.

Sound:

Sound are vibration waves that are perceived by the ear. Sound is important for culture through language music, and singing. Sounds can remind people of daily tasks or be used to evoke feelings. There are different types of sound: synchronous, non-sychronous, asynchronous, diegetic, and non-diegetic. Synchronous sounds are sounds that are timed to their source on screen or within the performance space. Non-synchronous sounds play on screen or in the performance space while their source isn't currently visible, but will be visible soon. Asynchronous sound is sound that doesn't match what we see. Diegetic sounds are actual sounds. (Voices of the character or ambient sounds) Non-diegetic sounds are commentary sounds. (Narration and nonrealistic sound effects like in cartoons.)

 Title: LINES

Artist: Anders Lind

The piece is colorful lines on the wall or floor. There is sensors that play sound at different pitches varying how far you are from the sensor. I enjoy how this piece is interactive. I think it's interesting how groups of people can create music together.

Movement:

Movement is a shift in the location of an object, light, or sound. Successful movement leads the eye in one direction. Movement can be seen in gestures (Isolations), which are movements by part of a whole, such as a single part of the body. Meanwhile, oppositional movement contrasts this with a clash of forces that lead the eye in a different direction. A objects center of gravity can effect movement. An object with a low center of gravity will often move steadily. An object with a high center of gravity will seem unbalanced.

Movement is important in film and video. Not only can the character or subject matter show movement but the camera can move in many directions that effect the viewers perspective. Panning is turning the camera side to side. Tilting is pivoting the camera up and down. A tracking or dolly shot is where the camera is placed on a rolling track so the camera is parallel to the ground. Camera's can also use zoom movement to make the subject appear closer or farther to the camera.

Title: A optical poem

Artist: Oskar Fischinger

I absolutely love the piece's instrumental music. It reminds me of music that would be in Mary Poppins or an old Disney short. The colors are really bright and bring a happy feeling. I enjoy how the shapes move across the screen as if they were dancing to the music. It shows a good element of movement as the shapes move vertically, horizontally, and diagonally across the screen at different paces. I learned the importance of how music and color can effect the art piece's mood.
