Time-based art uses different mediums to make the viewer more aware of time itself. There are different categories of how time may be used in these art forms. These categories include; measured time, experienced time, running time, biological time, and digital time. Each of these different forms of time-based media can be used by the artist to send a message to the audience.
Measured time shows the passing of time to the audience using different visuals that represent measured time. Experienced time has the audience feel the passing of time and and think about their reaction to it. Running time refers to the length of the artwork or video or how long the plot runs for in real time. Biological time refers to how the participant's biological clock affects the art piece. Lastly mentioned, is Digital time which refers to being aware of time and how it affects what you are doing. These were all of the points that the article, "Elements of 4D Art and Design" went over and discussed in more depth.

This is a video I found as an example of experienced time in art. I found this piece to be very interesting because it was making people more aware of what they were using their time for and possibly how much they were wasting. I thought it especially interesting how different people felt about how they were using time and their reactions to it. I personally probably wouldn't want to partake in this experience because it is almost upsetting to see how much of your life flies by without you even noticing. This artwork has certainly made me think more about how I use my time and it was interesting getting a peek into what others may be doing.
Sound-based art shows how sound is important for communication and how it can be used in different ways. Sound can be used to convey different emotions and even a lack of sound can as well. Different forms of sound include; an attack, sustain, and decay. There are also nonsynchronous sounds, asynchronous sounds, sound bridges, diegetic sounds, and non-diegetic sounds.
The attack is the time between the start and peak of the sound, the sustain is the amount of time before the decay, and the decay is the time it takes for the sound to diminish. All of these factors can differ depending on the environment of the sound. Nonsynchronous sounds play when the subject is not visible to the audience. Asynchronous sounds are sounds that don't match what is being shown. A sound bridge is a sound that connects one scene to the next. Diegetic sounds are sounds that come from the moment, they are "natural". Non-diegetic sounds are added over and not played live.

This is a video that I found that mimics the sounds used in a TV show and shows how they can be made. This used non-diegetic sounds to mimic what the moment would sound like and overlays it with the footage from the show. I liked how creative it was with coming up with how the sounds would be made. I find it fascinating how they perfectly fit the scene. I felt that I had never really taken into consideration how they make the sound effects for cartoons until really seeing it for myself.
Movement-based art shows a shift of location from any number of elements. Important aspects of movement include; successional movement, oppositional movement, stillness, center of gravity, gestures, organic, angular, and animated GIFs. Movement also shares some aspects with sound, such as; attack, sustain, and decay.
Successional movement leads the eye in one direction while oppositional movement leads the eye in different directions. Stillness is the emphasis of an absence of movement. Center of gravity is gravity that affects movement and how steady it is. Gestures are movements done by a singular part of a whole. Organic refers to more rounded movements while angular refers to more geometric movements. Animated GIFs are short moving images.

This video is an example of an animated GIF. GIFs often serve the purpose of being short video clips that can be sent to express an emotion or message. The clip that I found would be used to show that someone is busy working. I picked this one because I found it amusing. I also felt that the animation itself was well done.
