Elements of 4D_Latrice Holt

Time

Time is the fourth dimension that has multiple different interpretations depending on the certain field that one looks into. The past, present, and future are a continuation of time and its existing events. The element of time lies all around us, and it’s ever-changing. As humans, we try to manipulate, manage, and even exploit time. Without time, everything would be futile, and the world would remain the same from the beginning.

In the article, there are categories of time that are discussed, which are: measured time, experienced time, running time, biological time, and digital time. The following is how I would briefly discuss the five categories of time: Measured time or clock time, is recurring events like the seasons or years. Experienced time is the consideration of an individual’s “significance of an event.” Running time is the full length of a set visual content. Biological time regards bodily functions, such as feeling awake, tired, or hungry. Lastly, digital time often correlates with technology, like the battery life of an electronic and the amount of time given to complete a task.

24 Hours Jigsaw Puzzle featuring the photograph Time Flies Biological Clock by Spencer Sutton

I googled “biological time in art,” and I scrolled and found this puzzle image of a women running after a flying clock. This image caught my attention, because it’s indicating that time flies, and daily I say to myself: “Where did the time go?” Life is happening so fast, and it’s hard to get a grip of it. By viewing this artwork, I learned that I’m not alone when it comes to racing after the clock, and wanting things to slow down or just take a pause. This element (time) is important as 4D art, because it requires developing skills in order to be produced.

Sound

Sound is a vibration that is an integral part of communication and social framework perceived by the ear. Speaking, singing, and musical expression are a few examples of how sound is utilized. Whether its public spaces where there’s a bell ringing in the background, or human rituals like praising to the utmost high, those include sound. Furthermore, sound also functions as a warning signal by alerting people of danger in the distances ahead (e.g., fire trucks/police sirens, explosions).

The article focuses on and discusses the five different categories of sound, which are: synchronous, non-synchronous, asynchronous, diegetic, and non-diegetic. Synchronous sounds are timed to their on-screen sources or within an assigned performance space, like dialogue. Non-synchronous sounds however,  don’t have their sources visible (source has been or will soon be visible) while being played on-screen or on stage, such as video games. As for asynchronous sounds, it’s what’s being heard, but doesn’t match what’s being seen. For instance, a child placed in detention, while there’s sound of other children outside playing. Then there’s diegetic sounds that are “actual” sounds, while non-diegetic sounds are “commentary” sounds, like effects in cartoons.

    Title of PaintingLady With Umbrella
Artist: Leonid Afremov

This painting by Leonid Afremov is compelling, because of his style, in particular, the way he painted the leaves of the trees, and how everything merges together. The element of sound in this image works as 4D art, since you can imagine the sound of the umbrella popping open, the raindrops falling, and the lady’s feet splashing in the puddle. This piece was beautifully done, and also unusual, which best describes Afremov’s work.

Movement

Movement is a change or variation in the placement of an object, light, or sound. What affects movement is shape, space, levels of space, balance, energy dynamics, weight, and gestures. By employing these elements and principles, movement can set out any number of expressive or descriptive intentions, from physical to emotional reactions.

In any 4D work, the absence of movement or stillness is major, allowing distinction within a work. An example of this, would be if a character in a film stopped in the middle of an active walkway; the lack of movement would result in the character to stand out differentiating from every person in motion.

Title of Artwork: Art Movement, Modernist Art, Art Criticism, Digital Art, Fine Art

I like how in this artwork it’s essentially a hypnosis. However, instead of staying focused, this piece makes me want to avert my eyes, because of the excessiveness. The element of movement works as 4D art in this visual, due to the fact that this is a still image, but it appears to be in motion since the colors and patterns blend causing unsteadiness.
