"Textile production is one of the most polluting industries, producing 1.2 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) per year, which is more emissions than international flights and maritime shipping"(The price of Fast Fashion, 2018).
“around 5% of total global emissions come from the fashion industry”(The price of Fast Fashion, 2018).
"In the 21st century, the fashion industry has been found to be responsible for 10% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Approximately 20 new garments are made for each person every year on this planet and fashion purchases have increased 60% since 2000"(Boykoff et al., 2021).
"In terms of the garments themselves, studies of life cycle emissions have found that a quintessential cotton tee-shirt (based on 50 washes) contributes 35% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions through the manufacturing phase and 52% through the use phase"(Boykoff et al., 2021).
"200 tons of water is required to produce 1 ton of cotton textiles and petrochemicals used in production contribute significantly to ocean microplastics pollution"(Boykoff et al., 2021).
“With limited recycling options to recover reusable fibres, almost 60% of all clothing produced is disposed of within a year of production (ending in landfill or incineration. To put that into context, that is one rubbish truck per second to landfill. It has been estimated that less than 1% of material used to produce clothing is recycled within the clothing industry, with around 13% recycled for use in other areas“(The price of Fast Fashion, 2018).
